Our MP3 downloads are encoded at 320 kbps, the highest quality permitted by the MP3 format. Why does this matter to you? Because you're buying liturgical music, not rock and roll, and so compression and sampling rates matter to minimize loss and degradation of sound fidelity.

Original CDs are encoded at 1,020 kilobits/sec, and most download stores sell files at 128 kbs-one tenth the quality of the original. Higher sampling rates make for bigger files and longer download times, but the higher quality is well worth it-you'll hear the difference!

This debut CD by Anaphora includes a selection of 20 Nativity hymns in traditional Byzantine chant settings. This recording was among the first chanted entirely in English, and includes descriptive liner notes in English, and provides a very accessible rendering of these hymns.

Review:   This project offers the listener a variety of positive elements: the hymn selection is good in that includes some of the less well-known hymns and so offers a breadth unusual for many English projects, and the voices are clear and distinct and so the text is easy to hear and understand. Thus this CD is an excellent resource for newcomers to Byzantine music who are looking for a recording to help introduce them to the chant form, and to those interested in the Nativity material that is so infrequently recorded in a comprehensive way. Some of the tracks are especially notable, in particular track 17 "When it was time". The cover art is very good (though a more detailed insert would have been nice), and carried through to having it silk screened on the CD itself. It is evident that the performers are committed to the musical genre and pioneering new ground here, and presumably future projects will capture the nuance and verve found on recordings by more experienced Byzantine chanters. All in all though, the CD is worthwhile and offers a unique recording that most will want in their collection.
